Low-income residents of Mississippi are able to apply for free legal services from a number of statewide and regional legal aid organizations. Initial intake is performed through a shared Legal Services hotline available Monday through Thursday.

Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers Project (MVLP)

  • Legal Areas: Divorce, guardianship, adoption, birth certificate correction, conservatorship, emancipation, name change, expungement, foreclosure prevention, and estate planning.

  • Free Advice: Full representation, including legal advice, pleadings, and courtroom representation, is offered to Mississippians whose household income is at or below 200% of the federal poverty level. Eligibility for services is determined during the initial phone call with the intake hotline.

  • Legal Areas: Domestic violence, elder law, disability law, consumer law, divorce, child custody, education, protection orders, adoption, guardianship, public benefits, employment, eviction, housing, estate planning, and healthcare related matters.

  • Free Advice: Low-income residents of the 43 counties in central and southern Mississippi are able to apply for free assistance with legal problems. The problem must be within the Center's service area and cannot be a criminal or traffic case.


North Mississippi Rural Legal Services (North Mississippi)

  • Legal Areas: Family law, employment, housing, foreclosure prevention, consumer law, income maintenance, and disaster relief.

  • Free Advice: Free legal services are offered to low-income residents of the northern 39 counties of Mississippi. Income eligibility thresholds are set at 125% of the federal poverty level.
