Low-income residents of North Carolina are able to apply for free legal advice from several statewide and regional legal aid organizations. Applicants can apply online or over the phone during ordinary business hours every weekday.

  • Legal Areas: Consumer law, employment, family law, government benefits, housing, immigration, education, name changes, Native Americans, natural disasters, and veterans.

  • Free Advice: In providing free legal advice, Legal Aid of North Carolina prioritizes services for those families whose incomes are below 125% of the federal poverty level. Additionally, free legal help is only available for civil cases that fall within the organization's priority areas.

  • Free Advice: Free legal help is available to low-income residents of western North Carolina with a problem impacting their basic needs. Pisgah Legal Services does not offer assistance with criminal cases.

  • Legal Areas: Public benefits, health care access, community empowerment, housing, consumer law, immigration, criminal record expunction, tax disputes, domestic violence protection, simple estate planning, food access, and veteran benefit disputes.

  • Free Advice: Applicants living in the Charlotte area whose income is at or below 200% of the federal poverty level are generally eligible for free legal services. Some services, such as assistance with foreclosure prevention, have lower income requirements.
